The first in this cyberpulp series, four eccentric mercenaries are challenged with the task of covering up a parasitic outbreak that is causing the infected to mutate into savage creatures that can only exist through bloodshed. Will they be able to quell the outbreak in time or will their personal agendas cause them, and the rest of the planet, their lives?

This was a fun read, and I enjoyed the originality of the characters and backgrounds. The first transition to the character backstory threw me for a second, but I liked how it was done by the second one. There was just enough depth without spending too much time on them to develop interest in them as a character, after you already were aligned with them from the action at the beginning.

I'm already reading the next book by the author, and hoping to see the story build. The writing is excellent, with an occasional word thrown in there I had to look up and learn (some sounded like fun to use).

Overall, it was a fun adventure that didn't go overboard in any direction (seriousness, gushing jocularity between people, too much explanation of new concepts, etc.). It just flowed and kept you entertained. It is what I call a blend, in that it has pieces of various genres and doesn't care how well it fits in any one of them, only that the story flows, keeps you from guessing the outcome, and keeps you turning the pages.

Definitely worth the read!

Soldiers of Misfortune Parasite Lost eBook Kyle Aho Patrick Burdine Reviews

Great read. I was interested throughout the entire book. I would recommend anyone that likes action tor read this book! Good job Aho!
The book was a good edition to the horror / sci fi genre. Well worth the time. Give it a try!
Short and sweet with enough action to hold my attention and keep me reading. The plot and characters, while cliched, are solid and engaging. Minor spelling and grammar issues were grating, but not numerous enough to really ruin the book for me.
With a better editor and some more polish and this series could really be a standout, but for now it is a solid 3 star first outing and I look forward to seeing more.
I bought this book for my teenage son and he is the one who answered the above questions. He loves these books!
Aside from basic spelling errors("lead" instead of "led" at least three times, for example), the book was fairly well-written. I found the battle scenes were overdescribed and overlong. Not enough dramatic tension or engaging dialogue for my taste. The touch of humanity in Gideon at the end was a bit trite. The introduction of certain plot elements was rather clumsy. Use of a certain editorial refinement might have warranted a higher rating.
I believe this is the author's first published book. That makes it even better.
There was lots of action, interesting characters, and you could finish it in less than a day.

The plot was a little thin., but it was a short book, so no harm no foul. And there were mutants, so extra points for that.

The relationship between Dante and his father is something that's been done many times, so it didn't really add to the book for me.
Results good first effort for a new author that may be well worth watching. Good, fast and lots of action.
Several mercenaries have signed up for a "high pay, and no say" mission, whose object is uncertain and whose outcome could be fatal for all involved. They have come to fight for various reasons. One comes to pay off a debt to society, another to pay off a debt to his father. Yet another is agreeing to the dangerous mission in order to help finance his orphanage, where exploited children he has rescued personally can live and thrive in a peaceful, nurturing environment. Finally, and most importantly, there is a female mercenary who is fighting to save her child from the clutches of amoral scientists and a heartless corporation.

This is a solid first effort from Aho, who has a deft touch, especially when describing the technology of this future. I found some of the soldiers' accoutrements to be inspired, from a mechanical splint that forces a fractured finger (painfully) back into place, to the idea of a backup heart implant to protect one from the otherwise fatal affects of a chest wound. The author is also talented when dealing with protracted action sequences, of which there is no shortage in this book. I frankly think his gifts are well-suited to the "Mecha" subgenre of SF, and that he is born to write in the military SF category. All in all, I was pleased and entertained by this short read.
